Costuming:

How do you costume 80 kids? Organization!

Costume Liaisons: Each show has a student who takes measurements and sizes, works with the directors and program director to design and organize costumes.

The costumer acts as central costume control - giving sewing jobs to those who volunteer to help, in keeping with their skills and availablility. Some costumes are rented, some purchased, some made.

If you can offer to help sew - Thank you, thank you, thank you! Please let us know at auditions or by dropping us a line.

Here's what you can expect:

Staying ahead of the game!

We'll be taking measurements at auditions. Once the shows are cast each show's team (costume liaison, director and costumer), will spend a few hours at the table designing and organizing.

Then it's a few trips to the Goodwill. Followed by some hours searching the internet costume suppliers. Then it's a long trip to Joanns for each team. By the weekend we should know what can't be found for a reasonable price and needs to be made.

If you can sew, we'll have everything in a bag for you, ready to be dropped off.

Sewing tips for costumes:

***Don't sweat the small stuff. Unless you are constructing an elaborate gown, much of the garment can be simplified. Fasters and zippers can be replaced by velcro, buttons and decorative effects can be painted on, pockets eliminated.

*** Hems should be as generous as possible (you want to be able to let a hem out to fit a much taller actor in the future).

*** Oversize - we can always pin a garment in, or add a belt, or use a few basting stitches to bring the size in. It's much more time-consuming to add panels and let a piece out.

*** Remember the 20 foot rule - if you can't see the difference at 20 feet... why bring something up another inch or spend an hour fussing with a pleat?
