Parents FAQ:

Is PRT only for Pitman Residents?

Not at all! Many of our members are from the surrounding towns. All actors are welcome, and it's nice to see so many lifelong friends being made from other parts of the county.

How much will it cost?

Registration is $150. Two siblings are $200 Three siblings are $300, We try to keep our registration charges low so that families affected by the economy can participate.

Do we need to sell ads?

Theater Bugs do not have an ad sales requirement. To keep our registration fees down there is an ad sales requirement of $100 per student for Juniors and Mainstage shows. Successful ad-sellers start early and give it the time it needs. We can help by offering advice for successful ad sales. We offer prizes for high ad sales (iPods, tickets to Broadway Shows). We also are offering an ads buyout of $150 if you simply know that ads sales are not possible for your family. We find that the community is happy to support the local arts - and especially kids. We are hoping that the buyout option is a last resort and that you help us reach into the community for support.

What are the hours?

Rehearsal schedules can be found here. Staff requirements can be found here.

My teen wants to be a staff member - will they live at PHS?

PHS closes it's doors at 3:30, every day, Monday-Thursday. Auditions/Callbacks usually require a long day, as do meetings and the week leading up to the show. Costume liaisons, set construction assistants and SM/ASM positions sometimes require errand-running in afternoons or evenings. Other than that, if your teen is saying that they are out late at night doing "stuff for Pitman Rec." - I would pull a Columbo and contact the Program Director to check it out. Unless they're a director or tech director - then, yeah, they'll be pretty busy. Check the Staff page for their schedule.

Can I arrange a carpool/ride for my child?

Usually yes! Pitman kids tend to walk or bike, but we have members from all over the county. After auditions we will know what areas our cast is from and if you contact us we can put you in touch with other parents from your area.

Ways to help - Helpful gestures:

Help drive the kids on Ad runs

The last week of June and the first week of July are the weeks when our members are working hard to sell ads to local business owners. Parents can help by setting aside a few afternoons to drive a car full of kids to surrounding towns to help them sell ads and hang posters. We try to have at least 2 or 3 'Ad runs' every afternoon at 3:30. Parents just sit in the car and relax while the kids go 'door to door' at a strip mall or business complex.

Help in lobby at shows

At every performance we need about 5 parents to help with tickets and concessions. If you can help, show up an hour before the show starts.

Help out at one of our fundraisers

This year we are holding a Bake Sale, a Yard Sale, several sing-for-your-supper coin drops, and a stromboli sale. We need parents willing to give a little time to help out.

Assist with Theater Bugs programs

Everyone knows a room full of 5-8 year olds is a handful. Our staff could always use an extra eye at rehearsals. If you are free during the day and can help keep order from 9-12:30, even if it's only one day, it would be a big help (and it's pretty fun).

Big ways to help:

Spearhead a Fundraiser

We have a few fundraisers, Cabarets, a Stromboli Sale, but parents are always suggesting others - and they all sound like great ideas. But the staff is away at college during the school year, and the program director works her tush off as a professor/teacher/performer - we would love it if parents, or a group of parents, could combine to launch a fundraiser (the only rule - no sales of sweets).

Help plan a party or group event

Bowling nights, bus trips to broadway shows, you name it. During the summer it would be great to offer events like this for the group! But, truly, the staff and director have their hands too full running the shows in the summer to organize extra events. Also, there are three cast parties held at Brookside Swim Club - if we could get a parent or parents from each group (Bugs, Jrs, Mainstage) to help with planning the BBQ and sending out the invites, it would be a HUGE help.

Help sew costumes

This is a biggee, and we sure know it. If you have any sewing ability at all - we could use your help. Find out more about it here

Help on sets days

Our kids are responsible for most of the set building, but there are some things they are not allowed to do. Only the program director and the tech directors are allowed to use the table saws or circular saws (for obvious reasons). Having adults on hand during set building days would be a great help.

Help lay out the ad book

This can be a big job, but if you have the software and a scanner, it is a good bit easier. We do as much as we can - anything that we can lay out

we do ourselves. But to scan ads and lay it all out for the printer requires time and know-how. Having the program professionally layed out and printed would cost over $5000 - that's about 75% of what we make in ad sales!

Wish List:

Just a few items we tend to be perpetually in need of:

Clear plastic totes

Paint supplies and tarps

Garment bags

Corded Power Screwdrivers

Sawhorses!

Extension Cords

**Due to extremely limited storage space, we are unable to accept large donations of old clothes. It's a shame, too, because clothing donations are often very useful! But we aren't yet blessed with ample storage, so, thanks anyway.

Pitman Recreation Theater is supported by the

Pitman Recreation Commission, our members, and area businesses.

Without this support we could not do what we do - Thank you!
